Life of a Fisherman…

Life of a Fisherman

Trials and tribulations; abruptly bulldozed by reality!

  Pre-Dawn- 4:27 a.m.

There's nothing more pleasant than the whispering sound of your 'first cast of the day' lure floating, mid-air, like a dandelion seed drifting aimlessly to it’s unknown mark and then followed by it’s faint plunking into the still waters of a shy dawn’s first light.
It’s second only to the following slight wisp of a cool breeze, whistling a familiar, yet alien tune through your line and pole,  just as dawn breaks to wake up the rest of the world out of it’s slumbering innocence…(which in probably 10 or fifteen minutes will instantly transform into the chaos of bouncing beach balls and screaming adolescence!)

The silence, both before, and after this personally gratifying cast, is not an uncomfortable silence; oh, quite the contrary. It's instead a soothing to the soul and subconscious, that tends to make all life's pressures vanish, and leaving only one thought left on your mind as you humbly anticipate the first vibrations of a nibble at the other end of your ritualistic baiting stick.... How's it gonna' taste? Hmmmmm… You already know that answer!

Pre-armed with the sweet aroma of your frying pan, butter and spices already lying in wait and they too, almost crackle a systematic tune of anticipation; and sound like the singing melody of pride and rewardance of one of our most primal instincts that waters and floods one’s taste buds into a lake of it’s own salivitation…

And your second thought?... Ugh, If I eat it…,  how am I going to show everybody my prize catch?  Aghh…! I forgot the stupid camera!
Alright!... Honey?! You can untie the youngsters and bring on the beach balls now!

-The pure agony of defeat!

All About Pontoon Boats

Lots of boaters these days prefer a pontoon boat over a normal ski/fishing boat. So if you are searching for some information on pontoon boats and what they are, then you have come to the right article. You see pontoon boats come in many sizes, and there are quite a few different varieties.
One type of pontoon boat is the inflatable pontoon boat, which are mostly used for river fishing and in some cases can be used for river rapids. The inflatable pontoon boat usually holds about 2-3 people, they are really like a decked out canoe, except most of them have motors powering them, so you can have a whole lot of fun with them. They are very popular among fishermen, they are small and fit into tight places in rivers and streams that you may not be able to reach in a normal size boat.
Inflatable pontoon boats can range in price from 800 dollars and up, depending on whether you are looking to buy a new or used inflatable pontoon boat.
The next design I am going to go over are the motorized deck pontoons, these are similar to houseboats in a way, they have a level deck, with 2 to 3 cylinder shaped pontoons attached to the deck, causing the boat to float. The pontoons are made out of aluminum in most cases, which is very light and will avoid rusting.
There are usually rails all around the boat up to about two to three feet from the bow. Deck pontoon boats can range in size from 16-28 foot in length. Pontoon boats can be could for a family vacation out on the water, since their flat shaped deck allows more room for small crowds to get around comfortably compared to other types of motorized boats.
Pontoon boats can also be made into a great boat for fishing, you can invite your pals out to fish, drink, party, sunbathe, anything your mind could imagine. You can also find pontoon boats that are made for speed to if you would like to engage in some water skiing, or any other water sport you could think of. The faster pontoon boats made for speed normally have big engines, about 220 horsepower or more, and if you really want to go fast, you might want to look into the boats that have three pontoons, they are a bit more expensive but you have to pay extra to go fast.
The degree of customization you can do to a pontoon boat is limitless, because of the flat design there are so many things you could do. The majority of pontoon boats have bimini tops that can be raised up or down, some have built in tops, or sun roofs, so that you can jump or dive off of them, and some might even come with a slide attached to the sun roof.
Bottom line is that pontoon boats are great for the family, and are great for friends. The only main downside is, that they are not designed to go out into the ocean at all, so you will not be doing any deep sea fishing in a pontoon boat. There bow is very close to the water, and it is not going to take a big wave to crash over the deck, which could be very dangerous, so if you are into deep sea fishing, then a pontoon boat is not for you.

BOAT STORIES, BOATING JOKES, FISHING STORIES & JOKES...

Know what is required for your boat.

(“Your life could depend on it!” )

Before you set out for that boating adventure make sure you've got everything the law requires.  Boaters Marine Supply believes that boating safety is first and foremost.  As they say "ignorance of the law is no excuse."  Knowing and having what is required can prevent the best of days from becoming the worst in your life.

Take five minutes and check out the following Boating Basics.

In 1971 the Congress of the United States ordered the U.S. Coast Guard to improve recreational boating safety.  In response the U.S Coast Guard created specific federal regulations governing requirements for boats and what is to be on them.  In the years that followed state and local governments created regulations (which sometimes exceed the federal regulations).

The following is a summary of what is required for your boat:

  • Power boats on federal jurisdiction waterways as well as inland waterways must be registered or documented.
  • Registration numbers and decals must be displayed on your boat correctly.
  • Your original registration (certificate of number) must be on-board when in operation.
Note: A recreational vessel of five or more net tons may be documented as a yacht.  In this case the U.S. Coast Guard isues papers similar to large ships.

  • Whether or not your boat is documented, registration in the state of principal use is required (except Alaska where U.S Coast Guard issues).  If the boat is used on the ocean, a gulf, or similar water, register it in the state where you moor it.
  • Your boat should have the manufacturers HIN (Hull Identification Numbers) displayed in two locations (starboard side of transom 2" from top and under a cover or plate).  Boats without a transom must have it on the starboard side 1' from stern 1" from the top.
  • In most cases mono hull boats should have a manufacturer capacity plate installed in plain sight of the operator.  Depending on the type of boat and engine type (outboard vs. inboard) the plate will contain Max permitted horsepower, allowable max. weight of people onboard, allowable max. combined weights of people, motors, and gear.
  • Your boat is required to have the proper engine compartment ventilation.
  • Navigation lights are required during operation from dusk to dawn.  Note: anchor lights are always required when anchored.
  • Remember a PWC (Personal Water Craft) jet-ski or waverunner, in most cases, must carry an approved fire extinguisher.
  • Always file a float plan and give it to someone you trust to notify the authorities if you don't arrive at your destination as specified.  Of course you don't want to forget to contact the person you gave the float plan to...otherwise you know what will happen.

For more details see: US Coast Guard Auxiliary publication "Boating Skills and Seamanship 1998" or Boaters Marine Supply recommends taking the "Boating Skills and Seamanship" courses offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary or US Power Squadron in your area.

The following is a summary of what is required on your boat.

  • A PFD (Personal Flotation Device) is required for every person onboard the boat.  The PFDs must be U.S. Coast Guard approved (labeled as such).  In many states, the law says you must wear your PFD when underway or when on a PWC (Personal Water Craft) or water skiing, tubing, etc.
  • Boats over 16 feet must have a throwable PFD (Personal Floatation Device) onboard, and immediately available, in case someone falls overboard.
  • Every boat needs a working whistle or horn that can be heard at least ½ mile away.  Boats over 30 feet have additional requirements.  You can attach a whistle to your PFD so that you always have a sound producing device within reach.  Make sure it is a whistle that works when it gets wet.
  • Visual Distress Signals should be carried on all boats operating on coastal waters (the ocean or waters that lead to the ocean), the Great Lakes and waters connected to them up to a point where the body of water is less than 2 miles wide.  We recommend every boat carry visual distress signals.

There are day signals and night signals.  If you operate at night, you are required to carry night signals.  Motor boats less than 16 feet and manually propelled boats are not required to carry signals if they only operate during daylight hours.
Pyrotechnic distress signals, like flares, are a great signal device but are very dangerous and should only be used if your trained on how to properly use them.  Don't ever shoot them off for fun.

  • A U.S. Coast Guard approved, marine-type, Class B, fire extinguisher must be carried onboard power boats where it can be quickly and easily accessed.  Additional requirements exist for large vessels.  Extinguishers are not required on boats that don't have motors.

For more details see: US Coast Guard Auxiliary publication "Boating Skills and Seamanship 1998" or Boaters Marine Supply recommends taking the "Boating Skills and Seamanship" courses offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary or US Power Squadron in your area.

Tips on Buying a Used Aluminum Fishing Boat

Tips on Buying a Used
    Aluminum Fishing Boat

I think aluminum is the only way to go when buying a fishing boat. There are a whole lot of reasons why aluminum fishing boats are the best.

However, if you've been doing some homework, I'm sure you've found that new aluminum boats aren't cheap. Aluminum boats make the best boats, making aluminum fishing boats extremely popular, and so supply and demand being what it is, aluminum boats are very expensive to buy brand new.

So this is a very good reason for buying a used aluminum fishing boat; and done right, you can even get your fishing boat free (once you've sold it.) Let me explain.

Buying a used fishing boat is going to be way cheaper than buying a new boat. Like everything else, when you buy new, you pay a premium price for it. When you buy a new car you lose a ton of money the moment you drive it out the door, and you won’t sell it for what you paid for it, even with no miles on it.

It's the same with a fishing boat. When you buy a new boat you'll pay the premium price. So when you come to sell it some time after, (probably because you want a bigger one), you're sure to lose some money.

Now if you were to buy a used aluminum fishing boat, the chances are pretty good that it will cost you little or nothing once you've sold it. I’m just using my own experience as an example. I bought a second hand 10 foot aluminum fishing boat a couple years back. I've used it for quite a few fishing trips and since  that time, and I’ve had 2 children; so as they keep growing, I’m beginning to think about buying a bigger boat.

I recently looked at prices for used aluminum boats and I’m quite convinced that my boat is worth as much, if not a fraction more than what I paid for it 2 years ago. So, when I sell it, (assuming I get what I paid for it), I have paid nothing for 2 years use of my fishing boat! That wouldn't be possible if I bought my boat brand new. So, pretty much, I've had my fishing boat for 2 years, for free!

This is because aluminum boats are very sturdy, and last almost forever. This means they retain their resale value extremely well. A good aluminum boat will last long enough to will it to your kids. So they don't depreciate too much over time. This means that even an older boat that’s in good condition will still have good value.

Of course you need to take good care of your boat; if you bang it around and fill it with dents or scratch the paintwork it won't retain it's value as well.

As well as, you need to buy well. If you pay too much for your boat, then you won't get that back when you sell. But assuming you buy a great used aluminum fishing boat at a fair price, the chances are pretty good that it won't cost anything, over the time you've got your boat, if you treat it well.

That's my way to buy a used aluminum fishing boat, for free!
